How to apply

NSERC has prepared tutorial videos to summarize the process of applying for some of our funding opportunities. These videos provide an overview and general guidance only.

For more detailed information, read the individual descriptions and instructions for the program or supplement to which you are applying.

Deadlines

Depending on the funding opportunity you are applying for, there are a number of deadlines to keep in mind when submitting an application to NSERC. Refer to the Application deadlines and notification of results web page for more information.

If the deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, your application must reach NSERC by the following business day. Most institutions also have internal deadlines; contact the scholarship liaison officer at your institution for those deadlines. Late applications will not be accepted.

Rights to intellectual property from research

NSERC does not retain or claim any ownership of, or exploitation rights to, intellectual property resulting from your NSERC funding. However, as NSERC's role includes promoting the use of knowledge to build a strong national economy and improving the quality of life of Canadians, every effort should be made to have the results of NSERC-funded research exploited in Canada, for the benefit of our country. You are encouraged to discuss intellectual property rights with all parties and organizations involved in the research.

Refer to the Policy on Intellectual Property web page for more information.
