2015 NSERC Synergy Awards for Innovation

Energy performance is important to Manitoba, with its cold climate and large number of old commercial buildings. For this reason, Red River College and Manitoba Hydro have come together to reduce energy consumption and increase sustainability in the region.

Among its many accomplishments, the partnership has led to the construction of the most energy-efficient office tower in North America — Manitoba Hydro Place. The building has earned many awards, including the Best Tall Building Americas award for 2009 from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and Platinum Certification for its adherence to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Red River College and Manitoba Hydro’s partnership now extends to sustainable electrification of transportation. The team launched a first of its kind all-electric transit bus prototype in 2012 and has since been working together to assess how the vehicles and their charging stations will function in Winnipeg’s climate.
