NSERC showcases investments in diverse partnerships to advance research and innovation through its Alliance Program

When Canada’s world-leading scientists and engineers partner with diverse companies and organizations, and with researchers from across the globe, their research can result in new knowledge, products and services. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is committed to supporting innovative research partnerships, helping to advance research and innovation and provide positive economic, social, and environmental benefits for Canadians.
Today, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport, announced an investment of $347 million for 882 recipients through NSERC’s Alliance grants program. These grants support key priority areas for Canada, including environmental sustainability, clean technology and climate change, agriculture, information and communications technologies, natural resources and energy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and more.
The announcement took place at Université de Montréal which received over $2.7 million awarded to 21 recipients, including Mohamed Hijri, who received over $370,000 for a research project with BioSun and Lumiera that will make substantial contributions to Canada's overall efforts to improve food security in the face of a changing climate and growing population. This project will lead to the commercialization of agricultural biostimulants that will improve farm profitability by reducing crop loss, positioning Canada's agri-food industry as a global leader in innovation and environmental stewardship.
NSERC launched Alliance grants in 2019 to encourage university researchers to collaborate with partner organizations from across the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. By partnering with organizations that can use their work, researchers can turn their discoveries into impact for the benefit of all Canadians.
NSERC recently enhanced Alliance grants, making the program simpler, more flexible, modernized and responsive, following an evaluation through surveys, consultations and interviews with stakeholders.
